Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu safe for kids?

Absolutely. Your child’s safety is my top priority. I create a controlled, closely supervised environment where kids can learn and train safely.
During instruction, younger children practice techniques directly on me, so they aren’t applying submissions or holds to each other until they’re ready. As they grow more experienced, older kids begin working with partners — always with strict guidance to move slowly and respectfully.
Sparring is closely monitored at all times to make sure every student is applying techniques safely and no one is ever put at risk of injury. My goal is to build confidence and skill in a way that’s fun, structured, and above all, safe.

What should I bring or wear to my first class?

Bring athletic clothes (no pockets preferred), water, slides or flip flops, and a willingness to learn. Your first class will be a fun and hopefully an enlightening experience. If you choose to, you can purchase your Gi (kimono) from Omega Jiu Jitsu before your first class so you're ready to roll.

How is sparring handled for beginners and kids?

Sparring for Kids is very closely monitored for safety and proper application of technique. I only allow one pair of younger and older kids to spar at a time, per instructor. Currently, I'm the only instructor so I will be monitoring the sparring myself so that I can stop a sparring session if a student is in danger or has clearly been put in a position where a submission is imminent. The goal is to avoid any damage to the joints especially.

For adult beginners, sparring is handled a bit differently. I encourage outright beginners (white belts with zero stripes) not to participate in sparring altogether. However, I don't have a rule barring them from sparring if they choose to. That being said, sparring for adults is considered an "open mat" time where students can test their skills and abilities against each other in a fun yet competitive way. We are all here to learn and sparring is a great place to see if your technique is working.

Will this help my child with discipline, focus, or confidence?

Yes — Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a powerful tool for developing all three. Confidence tends to come first. As kids spend time on the mat and start to see their skills improving, they naturally become more self-assured and proud of what they can do.
Discipline and focus develop over time through structure and consistency. Many kids listen and follow directions well simply because I’m a coach figure and someone new outside the home. For younger kids, focus can be a challenge at first — but through fun, structured classes and engaging games, they learn to stay attentive. Older kids especially benefit as they begin to take ownership of their training and see the rewards of discipline firsthand.

Do coaches have experience working with children?

Yes. As a father of a 6 year old boy and a 3 year old girl, I have experience in wrangling kids attention, teaching, and patience with kids. I've also taught kids classes at other schools for 2 years, so I have a solid base working with kids of all ages and personalities.

How often are promotions or belt tests?

This is a touchy subject, and as an unwritten rule, Jiu Jitsu practitioners don't ask their coach or professor when they are getting their next belt. It's a big no no! That being said, I'll be going off a hybrid system of attendance, and a priority on skill. Most other schools, promote from skill and attendance as well, but they don't track the attendance aside from whether they remember if a student has been attending or not. That was always a frustrating thing for me and I felt like it wasn't a transparent system. I aim to change that, without sacrificing the skill priority. With my innovative sign in system, I'll be tracking time/attendance using the IBJJF standard minimum for each belt.

For kids, their promotions are based purely on time and attendance. However, in the interest of discipline I can hold a promotion or even take a stripe or two away for bad behavior. For context each stripe on a belt is 12 classes of attendance.

Can I watch the class while my child trains?

Of Course! You're encouraged to watch your child during their class, and since we're not a childcare facility we ask that you don't leave the school or parking lot area during your child's class.

Are there competitions or tournaments for kids?

Yes, there are competitions for kids. In the future I will have a weekly class specifically for competition training for adults and kids. I will also offer an "in house" tournament. The in house tournament will only be offered to members of the school, and the purpose is only to train competitors on what it feels like to have a win or go home scenario. Competition is a whole different ball game when it comes to nerves, and the more we can get our students used to that feeling the better they will be during a self defense scenario or a competition.

What color Gi am I allowed to wear

I allow any color Gi to be worn, with the exception of Red and orange (for safety), and neon colors, similar to highlighter green, yellow, and pink. Please ask me if you're unsure. I'm lenient on this rule, but I do want to keep a professional look to our school.

Do you have plans to expand class offerings in the future (e.g. women’s class, competition team)?

Yes, I would love to and plan to expand into women's classes, competition training, and high level advanced classes. Rome wasn't built in a day, but rest assured, these are in the plan.

Do you offer a Free Trial Class?

Yes, I offer a free trial class. Call to schedule your free trial class and remember to bring plenty of water and athletic clothing.
